A taut and plot-twisting story of political, emotional, and sexual intrigue, penned by the creator of Netflix’s House of Cards.
During a hotly contested presidential primary campaign a wunderkind press secretary, blinded by hubris, makes a wrong turn. After choosing to walk through “that door” his life, and the lives of others, spin out of control. Set against an all too familiar contemporary landscape, the story reveals the human struggle between ideologies and unbridled ambition.
“It’s exactly this kind of ‘edge of your seat’ theatre that I find stimulating to work on as a director. This is a story of back-room politics with smart, charismatic people caught up in a rapid-fire life while trying to make a meaningful impact on the entire country, and yet not always making smart choices. It speaks to all of us, seeing how this survivalist self-interest not only impacts each character, but how it can effect the outcome of elections” – Cathy F. Linder; Director
“The play is not about the issues of a political campaign, but rather the gamesmanship of the campaign and how that affects the characters’ choices and the sacrifices they’re willing to make morally in order to win” – Beau Willimon; Playwright
Playwright Beau Willimon is the creator of the Netflix series House of Cards and served as showrunner for the first four seasons. He received an Outer Critics Circle nomination for the John Gasner Award, and at Julliard Playwrights Program garnered both the Lila Acheson Wallace Fellowship and the Lincoln Center Le Compte du Nuoy Award. Other plays include Lower Ninth, Zusammenbruch, Spirit Control, The Parisian Womanand, and Breathing Time. Additional works by Beau have been developed and performed by MCC Theater, Ars Nova, HERE Arts Center, Cherry Lane Theatre, Battersea Arts Centre in London, and South Coast Rep. Beau wrote the script for The Ides of March, based on Farragut North, which starred George Clooney, Ryan Gosling, Evan Rachel Wood, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Paul Giamatti, Marisa Tomei, and Jeffrey Wright.
